Marking Changes with Only a Vertical Bar in Word 2007

Summary: If you want to configure how Word 2007 displays changes in your document, you may be at a loss as to where to start. This tip covers how you can change the markup display so that only vertical lines are displayed when there are changes. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 2007.)

Linda has recently upgraded her version of Word and is now using Word 2007. In the past she has always tracked her document changes with only a vertical bar to the outside border of the changed lines. Now, using Word 2007, she has not been able to track her changes the same way—with only the vertical bar. She wonders how she can configure Word 2007 so it displays only the vertical bar. Here's the steps:

  1. Display the Review tab of the ribbon.
  2. In the Tracking group, click the down-arrow under the Track Changes tool. Word displays a list of options.
  3. Choose Change Tracking Options. Word displays the Change Tracking Options dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  4. Near the top of the dialog box, use the Insertions drop-down list to choose (none).
  5. Use the Deletions drop-down list to choose Hidden.
  6. Use the Changed Lines drop-down list to choose any of the options except (none). (Outside Border is a good choice.)
  7. Click OK.

That's it. Your change marking should be just like you preferred it in older versions of Word.
