Setting the AutoRecover Directory

Summary: When you are using Word, it normally saves temporary AutoRecover files that reflect the latest state of your document. If you want these AutoRecover files to be stored in a certain place, you can configure Word to make that specification. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

Word has a feature that causes automatic saving of temporary files, in case there is a problem with your computer. (You know the routine--power goes out, whatever.) This feature is called AutoRecover. When an AutoRecover file is saved to disk, it is normally placed in the directory with the original file. If you want Word to place the AutoRecover files in a different directory, you can specify the directory by following these steps:

  1. Choose Options from the Tools menu. You will see the Options dialog box.
  2. Click on the File Locations tab. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. In the File Types list, select the AutoRecover Files option.
  4. Click on the Modify button. Word displays the Modify Location dialog box.
  5. Browse through your drives until you locate the directory you want to use.
  6. Click on OK. The Options dialog box again appears, this time with the directory you chose specified for the AutoRecover Files location.
  7. Click on Close.
