Turning Off Line Numbering

Summary: Word allows you to number lines within paragraphs of a document. If your needs require that a particular paragraph or style of paragraph not be numbered, you can configure Word to follow your direction. This tip explains how to do this type of formatting. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

In other issues of WordTips you learned how to turn on the line numbering feature. (It is great for legal or research-oriented documents.) There may be times, however, when you want to exclude a certain paragraph from line numbering. This is done with the Paragraph option of the Format menu, as follows:

  1. Position the insertion point in the paragraph that you don't want to have line numbers.
  2. Choose the Paragraph option from the Format menu. Word displays the Paragraph dialog box.
  3. Make sure the Line and Page Breaks tab is selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  4. Select the Suppress Line Numbers check box.
  5. Click on OK.

Tip #1136 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003

Great Idea! Word is a tool to get what you really want—printed output. This means you need to make sure that Word works as well as possible with your printer, whether it is sitting on your desk or in a room down the hall.
