Inserting the Date and Time

Summary: Inserting a date and time in your document is a snap using the tools provided in Word. Just pick the command, then specify what format you want to use. You can even specify if you want the date to update itself or not. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

Undoubtedly, the time will arise when you need to insert the current date or time in your document. This may be in the introduction of a letter or in a header or footer. Word allows you to quickly insert the date or time in several different formats. This information is inserted as a field which can be updated manually or is updated automatically when you print the document.

To insert the date or time into your document, follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point where you want the date or time inserted.
  2. Choose Date and Time from the Insert menu. If you are using Word 2007, display the Insert tab of the ribbon and click Date & Time in the Text group. You will see the Date and Time dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Select a format for the date or time.
  4. Select the check box at the bottom of the dialog box if you want the selected date or time to always reflect whatever is current. If you choose this, it means that Word inserts the date or time as a field so that it always represents the current date or time.
  5. Click on OK. The date or time, as specified, is inserted in your document.

Tip #1076 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003 | 2007
