Setting Matrix Column Spacing in the Equation Editor

Summary: If you are using matrices in your equations, you may want to adjust the spacing used between columns. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 6, Word 95, Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

When using the Equation Editor, you can control the spacing used by the Equation Editor between matrix columns in an equation. The value you specify represents a percentage of the normal spacing that would otherwise be used. Thus, a value of 150% represents a spacing that is half again as large as normal. The default setting is 100%, meaning the spacing is the same as normal. You can change the spacing, however, by following these steps:

Choose Spacing from the Format menu. The Equation Editor displays the Spacing dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
Click on the Matrix column spacing box. The Equation Editor changes the Spacing dialog box.
Enter a matrix column spacing that is a percentage of the normal spacing.
Click on OK.
