Adding Titles to a Chart

Summary: Adding titles to either an axis or the chart as a whole. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 6, Word 95, Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

Microsoft Graph is a simple graphing program provided with Word. It includes the ability to view your graph data in both spreadsheet and graph formats. The graphs you create can be inserted directly into your documents. One of the finishing touches you can add to your Microsoft Graph charts is to add titles. The program lets you add titles to any axis or the chart as a whole.

If you are using Word 6 or Word 95, follow these steps to add a title:

  1. Make sure your chart is visible on the screen and you have selected it. (You do this by clicking on the chart.)
  2. Select Titles from the Chart menu. Word displays the Chart Titles dialog box.
  3. Select the type of title you wish to add.
  4. Click on OK. A text box appears near the element to which you wanted to add a title.
  5. Enter the text for the title, formatting it as desired.

If you are using Word 97 or a later version, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your chart is visible on the screen and you have selected it. (You do this by clicking on the chart.)
  2. Select Chart Options from the Chart menu. Microsoft Graph displays the Chart Options dialog box.
  3. Make sure the Titles tab is selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  4. Using the controls at the left of the dialog box, enter the title you want for any and all types of titles.
  5. Click on OK. Microsoft Graph 2000 adds your titles as directed.

Tip #720 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 6 | 95 | 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
