Selecting a Chart Pattern

Summary: When using Microsoft Chart, you can select the patterns used in the various parts of the chart. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 6, Word 95, Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

As Microsoft Graph displays your data in a graphic format, it automatically selects colors for each of the data series (rows of data) it charts. If you are using Word 6 or Word 95, the colors used by Microsoft Graph are selected from a palette of 16 colors. To change colors, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your chart is visible on the screen and you have selected it. (You do this by clicking on the chart.)
  2. Select a data series by clicking your mouse on the graphic representation of that series. For instance, if your data is displayed as a column chart, click on the column that represents the series whose color you want to change.
  3. Select Patterns from the Format menu. Microsoft Graph displays the Area Patterns dialog box.
  4. In the Foreground box, select the color you want to use for the data series.
  5. Click on OK.

If you are using Word 97 or a later version, the palette from which you can select your colors consists of 56 choices. To change colors, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your chart is visible on the screen and you have selected it. (You do this by clicking on the chart.)
  2. Select a data series by clicking your mouse on the graphic representation of that series. For instance, if your data is displayed as a column chart, click on the column that represents the series whose color you want to change.
  3. Choose Selected Data Series from the Format menu. Microsoft Graph displays the Format dialog box for the selected item. The Patterns tab should be selected. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  4. In the Area portion of the dialog box you can select the color you want to use for the actual data series.
  5. Using the Color pull-down list, you can select a color you want to use for the outline border of the data series.
  6. Click on OK.
