Adding Information after the Endnotes

Summary: Endnotes appear at the end of the document, right? Not always, as Word provides a way that you can actually add as much information as you want after the endnotes. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

Linda knows how to add endnotes to the end of a document. What she wants to do, however, is to add a page after the endnotes in order to add additional references that need to be included with her document.

The way to do this is fairly simple in Word. By default, endnotes are placed at the end of the document in which they occur. You can, however, specify where you want endnotes to appear. You have two choices: end of the document (the default) and end of the section.

What this means is that you can add a next page section break after the end of your document's body, and then add to the new section (the part after the section break) the information you want after the endnotes. Then, follow these steps if you are using Word 97 or Word 2000:

  1. Position the insertion point within the section that contains your endnotes (the main body of your document).
  2. Choose Footnote from the Insert menu. Word displays the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.
  3. Click the Options button. Word displays the Note Options dialog box.
  4. Make sure the All Endnotes tab is displayed.
  5. Using the Place At drop-down list, choose End of Section.
  6. Close all the open dialog boxes.

If you are using Word 2002 or Word 2003, follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point within the section that contains your endnotes (the main body of your document).
  2. Choose Reference from the Insert menu, and then choose Footnote from the resulting submenu. Word displays the Footnote and Endnote dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Click the Endnotes radio button.
  4. Using the drop-down list to the right of the Endnotes radio button, choose End of Section.
  5. Click the Apply button.
  6. Click Cancel to close the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.

If you are using Word 2007, then the steps are different still:

  1. Position the insertion point within the section that contains your endnotes (the main body of your document).
  2. Make sure the References tab of the ribbon is displayed.
  3. Click the small icon at the bottom-right of the Footnotes group. Word displays the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.
  4. Click the Endnotes radio button.
  5. Using the drop-down list to the right of the Endnotes radio button, choose End of Section.
  6. Click the Apply button.
  7. Click Cancel to close the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.

After this change, the endnotes should appear just before the section break, and right before the additional reference items needed in the document.
