Controlling Endnote Placement

Summary: Endnotes are often used in technical and scholarly documents. You can control exactly where the endnotes appear in your document by following the steps presented in this tip. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

Word allows you to control where your endnotes appear, if you are using endnotes. You can cause them to appear either at the end of each section in your document or at the end of the document itself. If you don't use sections in your documents, then there is effectively no difference between the two choices. If, however, you use sections to break apart your document into chapters (or some other arbitrary division), then there is a big difference between the two placements.

To control where Word places endnotes in your document, follow these steps if you are using Word 97 or Word 2000:

  1. Select Footnote from the Insert menu. Word displays the Footnote and Endnote dialog box.
  2. Click on Options. Word displays the Note Options dialog box.
  3. Make sure the All Endnotes tab is selected.
  4. Using the Place At drop-down list, select where you want Word to place your endnotes.
  5. Click on OK.
  6. Click on Close in the Footnote and Endnote dialog box if you don't want to add an endnote at this time; otherwise click on OK.

If you are using a later version of Word, then you should follow these steps instead:

  1. If you are using Word 2002 or Word 2003 select Reference from the Insert menu and then choose Footnote. If you are using Word 2007 display the References tab of the ribbon and click the small arrow icon at the bottom-right of the Footnote group. Word displays the Footnote and Endnote dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  2. Choose the Endnotes radio button.
  3. Using the drop-down list to the right of the Endnotes radio button, select where you want Word to place your endnotes.
  4. Click on Apply.

Tip #509 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003 | 2007
