Browsing by Heading

Summary: The Object Browser can be a great (albeit underused) way of navigating through your document. One handy way to move about is to browse based on the headings in your document. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

Sometimes it is helpful, while editing a document, to jump quickly from one heading to the next. You can do this very easily in Word by following these steps:

Click on the Select Browse Object icon. This looks like a bullet, or a dot, near the bottom of the vertical scroll bar, at the bottom-right corner of your screen. Word displays a palette of items by which you can browse.
Select the Headings option from the palette. The palette disappears and Word jumps to the next heading in your document.
Click on the upwards-pointing, blue double arrows (just above the Select Browse Object icon) to jump to the previous heading.
Click on the downwards-pointing, blue double arrows (just below the Select Browse Object icon) to jump to the next heading.
