Error Generated if Files Opened in Word Session

Summary: Greg has a problem with Word 2002 crashing, depending on how he opens files. This seems to be a problem that Microsoft knows about, and there is a fix. If the problem is not caused by what Microsoft thinks it is, then guidance is provided on how to start tracking down the problem. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 2000.)

Greg described a problem he encountered in Word 2002 where the program crashes when exiting Word, but only if he opens a file using File | Open. If he opens the file by using the Windows Explorer (double-clicking on a document icon) he doesn't have the problem.

According to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, this problem is related to the Works in Word Suite add-in. If the add-in is installed on your system, the described error is known to crop up. The solution is to remove the add-in, and then the problem is also removed. Full details on how to do this can be found in the following Knowledge Base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=322201

If your system does not have the add-in installed, then the problem is something that Microsoft hasn't heard of yet. The only solution is to go through the normal troubleshooting regimen for Word, trying to narrow down the cause of the problem. To assist in this process, Microsoft has provided some tools and an absolutely huge Knowledge Base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=289506

The article describes the use of the Support.dot template and the steps you can use to isolate problems in Word 2002.
