Greg described a problem he encountered in Word 2002 where the program crashes when exiting Word, but only if he opens a file using File | Open. If he opens the file by using the Windows Explorer (double-clicking on a document icon) he doesn't have the problem.
According to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, this problem is related to the Works in Word Suite add-in. If the add-in is installed on your system, the described error is known to crop up. The solution is to remove the add-in, and then the problem is also removed. Full details on how to do this can be found in the following Knowledge Base article:

If your system does not have the add-in installed, then the problem is something that Microsoft hasn't heard of yet. The only solution is to go through the normal troubleshooting regimen for Word, trying to narrow down the cause of the problem.
