Changing the Type of Page Numbers Used in Headers or Footers

Summary: Adding page numbers to a header or footer is a snap, and Word allows you to control exactly how those page numbers appear. This tip explains how you can choose different numbering systems (letters, numbers, etc.) to accomplish the page numbering. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, and Word 2003.)

As you already know, Word allows you to make page numbers a part of your headers or footers. After adding the page numbers, you may want to change the type of page numbers used. Word allows you to use several different types of page numbers, as follows:

Type Selection
Arabic 1, 2, 3...
Arabic with Dashes - 1 -, - 2 -, - 3 -...
Uppercase Roman I, II, III...
Lowercase Roman i, ii, iii...
Uppercase Alphabetic A, B, C...
Lowercase Alphabetic a, b, c...

To change the format of your page numbers, follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point in the section of your document whose page numbers you wish to change.
  2. Choose the Header and Footer option from the View menu. You will see the Header and Footer dialog box.
  3. Click on the Format Page Number icon. You will see the Page Number Format dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  4. Select the numbering format you wish to use from the Number Format list. The table indicates the available types of formats.
  5. Click on OK.
  6. Click on OK from the Header/Footer dialog box.

Tip #177 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003
