Adding a Box Around Selected Text

Summary: You can use a special field to put a box around text within a paragraph. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 6, Word 95, and Word 97.)

In other WordTips you learn that you can quickly and easily add borders around paragraphs of text. You can also add borders around words or characters within a paragraph. This is done by using some of the special field formatting capabilities of Word. To add a border around text within a paragraph, follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point where you want the boxed text to appear.
  2. Press CTRL+F9 to insert field braces.
  3. Within the field braces, type EQ \x(text), replacing "text" with the text you want boxed.
  4. Press SHIFT+F9 to show the results of the field.

As an alternate way of performing the same task, you can follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point where you want the boxed text to appear.
  2. Choose the Field option from the Insert menu. This displays the Field dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. In the left side of the dialog box, choose Equations and Formulas as the category of field.
  4. In the right side of the dialog box, choose Eq as the field name.
  5. Click on the Options button.
  6. Choose \X() as the switch you want to use, then click on Add to Field.
  7. Within the field text box, position the insertion point between the two parentheses.
  8. Type the text you want to appear as boxed.
  9. Click on OK twice.

You should note that the text around which the box will appear should all be on the same line. If the text wraps across a couple of lines, the results will not be as desired.

Tip #166 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 6 | 95 | 97
