Embedding an Excel Chart in a Word Document

Summary: Word and Excel usually work pretty well together. This means that you can easily paste charts from Excel into your Word documents. Here's how to go about doing the pasting. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

Most of the time, Microsoft Office applications work fairly well together. For instance, Word allows you to embed a chart directly from Excel into a document. This is done in the following manner:

  1. Select the Excel chart you wish to embed in your Word document. (Make sure you select the entire chart, and not just a portion of it.)
  2. Press Ctrl+C to copy the chart to the Clipboard.
  3. Switch to the Word document.
  4. Position the insertion pointer where you want the chart placed.
  5. Display the Paste Special dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.) In versions of Word prior to Word 2007, click Edit | Paste Special. In Word 2007 display the Home tab of the ribbon, click the down arrow under the Paste tool, and then choose Paste Special.
  6. Select the Microsoft Excel Chart Object as the preferred method of pasting. (Depending on your version of Word, the wording of the object type might differ slightly. For instance, in Word 2007 the wording is Microsoft Office Excel Chart Object.)
  7. Make sure the Paste Link radio button is selected.
  8. Click on OK. Word inserts the linked chart in your document.

Tip #62 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003 | 2007
