Flipping a Drawing Object

Summary: Place a drawing object in your document, and it doesn't have to stay that way. You can flip a drawing object in either of two directions, as discussed in this tip. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

Once you have created a drawing object in Word or placed into your document a graphic image, you can flip it horizontally or vertically. To flip an object, follow these steps if you are using a version of Word prior to Word 2007:

  1. Select the pointer tool (the arrow) from the Drawing toolbar.
  2. Using the mouse, point to the object you want to flip, then click on it. Word places small square boxes called handles around the object.
  3. Choose the Rotate or Flip option from the Draw menu on the Drawing toolbar. Word displays a submenu of available actions.
  4. Click on either Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical. Word flips the object in the direction specified.

There is no Drawing toolbar in Word 2007, so flipping is done in a different manner:

  1. Select the drawing object you want to flip.
  2. Display the Format tab of the Ribbon.
  3. In the Arrange group, click the Rotate tool. Word displays a palette of choices you can apply to the object.
  4. Click on either Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical. Word flips the object in the direction specified.

Tip #60 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003 | 2007
