Spelling Errors on Internet Addresses

Summary: Tired of Word marking Internet addresses as spelling errors? You can turn off this check by applying the steps in this tip. (This tip works with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002, Word 2003, and Word 2007.)

If you have a large number of Internet addresses in your document, and those addresses always slow you down when doing a spell check, you can instruct Word to ignore them. This means that any URLs or e-mail addresses will be ignored by the spell check utility. If you are using a version of Word prior to Word 2007, follow these steps to make sure your Internet addresses are being ignored:

  1. Choose Options from the Tools menu. Word displays the Options dialog box.
  2. Select the Spelling & Grammar tab. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Make sure the Ignore Internet and File Addresses check box is selected.
  4. Click on OK.

If you are using Word 2007, then you should follow these steps:

  1. Click the Office button and then click Word Options. Word displays the Word Options dialog box.
  2. Click Proofing at the left side of the dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Make sure the Ignore Internet and File Addresses check box is selected.
  4. Click on OK.

Tip #47 applies to Microsoft Word versions: 97 | 2000 | 2002 | 2003 | 2007
